The British, who are ruling India, arrest Heinrich and his fellow mountaineer Peter Aufschnaiter, imprisoning them in a Prisoner of War (POW) camp in Dehradun.
The Twist: Escaping and Reaching Lhasa
After several failed attempts over a few years, Heinrich and Peter finally escape from the camp in 1944. Enduring harsh snowy mountains, starvation, and attacks from locals, they reach the holy city of Lhasa (the capital of Tibet), which is forbidden to foreigners. There, they find shelter with the help of a diplomat and aristocratic families.
Friendship with the Dalai Lama and Heinrich’s Transformation
After settling in Lhasa, Heinrich receives a summons from the young 14th Dalai Lama. Heinrich becomes a tutor to the Dalai Lama, who is immensely curious to learn about the outside world. He teaches him geography, Western science, and technology. During this journey, Heinrich even builds a small movie theater for the Dalai Lama. Influenced by the Dalai Lama’s pure heart and the peaceful lifestyle of the Tibetans, Heinrich—who was once hot-tempered and selfish—undergoes a significant transformation. Climax: Chinese Invasion and the Fall of Tibet
The story takes a crucial turn in 1950. After the communist government is formed in China, it decides to annex Tibet and sends the People’s Liberation Army (the Chinese army) into the region. Since the Tibetan army is very small, an inevitable war scenario arises. However, Heinrich’s friend, who is also a Tibetan military commander, surrenders to the Chinese army without putting up a fight, betraying his country. Consequently, Tibet falls completely under Chinese control.

The Beginning: Exploration Under the Sea
David (Nick Nolte) and his girlfriend Gail (Jacqueline Bisset) travel to the beautiful island of Bermuda for a vacation. While scuba diving in the ocean, they discover the wreckage of a sunken World War II ship named the ‘Goliath’. Inside the ship, they find an old Spanish coin and a small glass ampoule containing a yellowish liquid. To learn more about these objects, they meet Romer Treece (Robert Shaw), a local veteran sea treasure hunter.
The Twist: Morphine and Ancient Treasure
After testing the glass ampoule, Treece identifies that it contains ‘morphine’ (a drug used to manufacture heroin). They soon realize that there are thousands of such morphine ampoules (nearly over thirty thousand) inside the sunken Goliath.
This matter comes to the attention of Henri Cloche (Louis Gossett Jr.), a local drug mafia don. Wanting to seize the morphine at any cost to sell it on the black market, he begins stalking and threatening David and Gail.
Meanwhile, Treece and David go back to the ocean floor to investigate thoroughly, uncovering an astonishing secret. Right beneath the World War II shipwreck, they discover the remains of an old 1715 Spanish ship (El Virgen) that had collapsed. They confirm that it contains highly valuable gold jewelry and rare treasures.
Conflict and the Agreement
They need time to recover the ancient Spanish treasure. To buy time, Treece strikes a deal with the mafia don Cloche. He convinces Cloche that if he waits until the treasure is salvaged, Treece will hand over all the morphine ampoules to him. However, Treece’s real intention is to destroy the ship and the drugs so they never fall into the hands of the mafia.
Climax: The Battle on the Ocean Floor
After recovering a magnificent gold ornament from the Spanish treasure (a jeweled dragon pendant, which proves the treasure belonged to the Queen of Spain), Treece puts his plan into action. He begins planting underwater explosives to completely blow up the ship containing the morphine. In the meantime, Cloche finds out about Treece’s plan and dives to the ocean floor with his henchmen.
A deadly battle ensues deep underwater between Treece, David, and Cloche’s gang. During the struggle, a massive ‘Moray Eel’ (a terrifying, snake-like large fish) living in the shipwreck attacks Cloche’s henchmen.
On the other side, Cloche and Treece engage in a life-and-death struggle underwater. Fighting with all his might, Treece manages to trap Cloche amidst the ship’s wreckage. At that exact moment, the Moray eel attacks Cloche and drags him inside. Treece immediately detonates the planted explosives and swims toward the surface. The massive explosion completely destroys the Goliath ship along with all the morphine ampoules inside.
Conclusion
Following the terrifying explosion, David and Gail reach the shore and wait anxiously, fearing Treece might have died. However, Treece surfaces safely. He places the rare Spanish dragon pendant they worked so hard to find into David and Gail’s hands. The film ends with the three of them safe and becoming multi-millionaires with the immense treasure.
